The "petrele" (petrels) are a group of marine birds adapted to life on the open sea. They are characterized by their long, narrow beaks with tubular nostrils and a flight style based on rapid gliding. Most species nest on islands, cliffs, or in burrows, usually far from the mainland. They are long-lived but slow-reproducing birds, making them vulnerable to increased adult mortality. While rarely seen in Poland, they are important indicators of the health of oceans and seas.
